Restriction enzymes cut out certain parts of a DNA sequence by palindromic patterns, leaving behind sticky ends. This method can be used to cut open the plasmid to leave sticky ends and also to selectively cut out genes to be inserted. Recombinant bacteria could be identified by the use of antibiotics. At the same times as the required gene is inserted the gene for resistance to a specific antibiotic could be inserted. Bacteria which could survive in culture in agar plates...
